Environmental Stewardship

At Soils & Structures, our commitment to sustainability extends into the laboratory. Testing concrete is essential for structural safety, but the process generates significant material byproduct. We have developed a process to ensure these materials serve a second purpose rather than ending up in a landfill.

After our concrete test cylinders have served their purpose in the lab, they are crushed and repurposed. This recycled material meets MDOT specifications, allowing it to be reused locally as aggregate base for parking lots and roadways across Michigan. Through this initiative, we divert more than 250 tons of concrete from landfills every year.

Furthermore, we are conscious of the tools we use to create this waste. We cast our samples using Deslauriers BIO-CYLINDER™ molds. These molds feature a proprietary additive that allows them to biodegrade in a landfill environment within approximately three to five years, significantly reducing long-term plastic waste.
